Abstract:

Design of Experiments: the Heart of Statistical Modelling

                          Steven Gilmour

                 Queen Mary, University of London

Well-planned experiments are designed according to statistical principles
and the resulting data are analysed using statistical models. The design
and modelling phases are closely linked, with the design used determining
the initial model and the proposed model being used to determine how to
choose a good design. The fundamentals of the theory of the design of
experiments will be described, emphasising the link with modelling. The
importance of recognising the separate roles of treatment structure and
block structure will be described and the important ideas of
randomization, replication and blocking will be reviewed. Brief mention
will be made of some of the newer areas of design, such as optimal design
and Bayesian methods.
