Dispersion Models and Generalized Linear Regression

Bent Jørgensen (University of Southern Denmark)

The talk will give an overview of basic techniques for
analysis of generalized linear models with error distributions
from the class of dispersion models. Nelder and Wedderburn's
original definition of generalized linear models was based on error
distributions in the subclass of distributions now called exponential
dispersion models. This class includes for example the normal, gamma,
Poisson and binomial distributions, and Nelder and Wedderburn's method
of analysis of deviance thereby unifies techniques for continuous and
discrete data. Certain types mixed continuous/discrete data may also be
handled in this way. However, other types of data, such as angles and
proportions, require a different type of dispersion models, called proper
dispersion models. Most of Nelder and Wedderburn's ideas may be extended
to the whole class of (exponential and proper) dispersion models.
Generalized linear models hence provide a unified approach to regression
and analysis of variance for a wide variety of non-normal data.
