Seminário Conjunto ICMC/UFSCar  29/03/2012 - 14h00

LOCAL: Auditório Luiz Antonio Favaro - Bloco 4 - ICMC-USP

TITLE: How BIG is Your Mathematics?

SPEAKER: Prof. Dr. Frank Lad, University of Canterbury, New Zealand

ABSTRACT:

This talk will discuss and exemplify Bruno de Finetti's fundamental theorem of probability. This will be done firstly by presenting three solutions to the problem stated below, and secondly by discussing the assessment of error rates in median decision procedures. This issue has arisen in the context of diagnosing asbestosis using x-ray screening as opposed to histological exams.

Here is the problem, which you might try to solve for yourself before the seminar: An urn contains sixteen billiard balls, some of them white, the remainder are red. Two balls are drawn from the urn. The probability that they are the same color is the same as the probability that they are different colors. How many of the balls in the urn are white?

N.B. In thinking about your solution, be sure that you are solving the problem posed, and not some other problem.
