Subject: Webinar on Introduction to Bayesian Computational Methods with Applications

From the International Society for Bayesian Analysis

ISBA is pleased to announce the first offering in the Section on Bayesian Statistical Sciences new web-based training series of  webinars. Web-based training is becoming increasingly popular as a  cost-effective alternative to live training courses and  ISBA/SBSS is excited about offering the program as a service to its membership.  "Introduction to Bayesian Computational Methods with Applications" will be presented by Joseph Ibrahim, Department of Biostatistics, University of North Carolina, on Wednesday, April 25, from 1-3 p.m. Eastern time. For more information and to register, please visit the SBSS webinar page at: http://www.amstat.org/sections/SBSS/webinar.cfm

Abstract:

This Webinar reviews the basic concepts of Bayesian inference and focuses on the practical use of Bayesian computational methods. The objectives are to familiarize statistical programmers and practitioners with the essentials of Bayesian computing, and to equip them with computational tools in SAS and WinBUGS through a series of worked-out examples that demonstrate sound practices for a variety of Bayesian concepts. Specifically, we discuss MCMC methods, such as Gibbs sampling and the Metropolis algorithm and illustrate Bayesian inference using these computational methods with several statistical models. We will also examine computational issues in sensitivity analysis, prediction, model assessment and selection, multivariate analysis, and so on. The examples are done using SAS, with code explained in detail. Attendees should have a background equivalent to an M.S. in applied statistics. Previous exposure to Bayesian methods or SAS software is useful but not required. Familiarity with material at the level of this text book is appropriate: Probability and Statistics (Addison Wesley), DeGroot and Schervish.

About SBSS Webinars

Each registration is allowed one web connection and one audio connection. The section encourages multiple persons to view each registered connection. For example, if your department or agency has a conference room with a computer, projector, screen, and a speakerphone, you can pay for one registered connection and have all of your staff attend the webinar in the conference room.

The access information and presentation materials will become available to registered participants two business days before the scheduled webinar time. The presenter controls the flow of the presentation. When the presenter run software or show Web pages, the audience will see this on their computer screens in real time. Generally the audience does not ask questions on phone. Questions for the presenter are submitted using the chat feature found on the webinar web page. The presenter can see the questions as they come in and answer them during the presentation.

Income from webinars helps support junior travel awards for SBSS and ISBA members to participate in Bayesian meetings.  If you have an idea for a webinar or would be interested in offering one, please contact the ISBA Continuing Education liason Kate Calder at CALDER@STAT.OSU.EDU
