TÍTULO: Piecewise exponential model: a flexible and attractive alternative for parametric models in survival analysis

PALESTRANTE: Fábio Nogueira Demarqui - UFMG

RESUMO:

The piecewise exponential model (PEM) is one of the most popular and useful models in reliability and survival analysis. Although parametric in a strict sense, the PEM has an strong nonparametric appeal as it provides good approximations to many continuous distributions and, in prac tical situations, can describe accordingly hazard functions of several shapes, bringing great flexibility in survival data modeling. For this reason, the PEM arises as a quite attractive alternative to parametric survival models, and has been widely used in the literature on survival analysis. In this talk we present, through the analysis real data sets, some Bayesian approaches that we have proposed to fit proportional hazard and cure rate models using the PEM. As we advocate that the PEM is a flexible and atractive alternative to parametric survival models, for comparison purposes we also analyze the same data sets with the corresponding Weibull models, and draw some conclusions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
