InSilicoVA – An Algorithm for Automated Cause of death Classification using Verbal Autopsy Data

The burden of disease – measured as the fraction of deaths in each major cause group – is a fundamental metric of population health. Estimating the burden of disease requires a cause of death for all deaths contributing to the estimate. Globally, about 60% of deaths are not registered and do not get a cause – mostly in Africa. Verbal autopsy is a method for ascertaining cause of death when traditional approaches are not feasible. Computational/statistical algorithms are used to automate cause of death classification using data from verbal autopsy. This lecture presents the InSilicoVA automated cause-coding algorithm for verbal autopsy and identifies possible ways to improve automated cause coding.
