“Groups, Rings and Group Rings 2024” International Conference celebrates the 80th birthday of Prof. César Polcino Milies

From July 8 to 13, the fifth edition of the International Conference “Groups, Rings and Group Rings 2024” will take place in Ubatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo. The conference aims to bring together specialists in group theory, ring theory, group rings and their applications and this year celebrates the 80th birthday of mathematician César Polcino Milies.

The event features lectures by experts from around the world, poster presentations and two workshops given by University of São Paulo Institute of Mathematics and Statistics professors Mikhailo Dokuchaev and César Polcino Milies, Emeritus Professor since 2023 and the event’s honoree.

About Professor César Polcino Milies

Francisco César Polcino Milies, born in Montevideo on March 12, 1944, is a mathematician and professor who completed his Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD in Mathematics at the University of São Paulo (USP) between 1971 and 1974. He also has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has been working as a psychologist since 1990.

His academic career is marked by his dedication to research in algebra, with an emphasis on group theory, ring theory, group rings and algebraic code theory. He was director of USP’s Institute of Mathematics and Statistics from 2002 to 2006 and of the Inter-University Center for the History of Science from 2008 to 2011. In 2023, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus at IME-USP.

Polcino has supervised more than twenty doctoral students and is recognized for his contributions to the history of mathematics, having supervised the first thesis in History of Mathematics presented at IME-USP in 2008.
