Laboratory experiments have revealed that the Wolbachia symbiotic bacteria induces the inhibition of the dengue virus inside the mosquitoes, and this may lead to a considerable reduction of dengue morbidity in human populations. This presentation is focused on Wolbachia-based biocontrol that stems from the optimal control approach for the design of optimal release programs characterized by the following three quantifications: (a) optimal time of effective releases; (b) a total number of Wolbachia-carrying insects to be mass-reared, and (c) the estimated number of human infections to be prevented. Additionally, some works in progress and open questions will be discussed.
