***********

There are several items of news I would like to convey to the current
membership and earlier supporters of the IASE whose memberships may have
lapsed.

The IASE 2012 Roundtable Conference, "Technology in Statistics Education:
Virtualities and Realities", will be held on 2-6 July 2012, in Cebu City,
Philippines. The Roundtable format differs from many other conferences. Over
four and a half days, only 16 invited papers will be presented. Each paper
will receive a full hour for presentation and discussion. The authors and
discussants have a worldwide distribution, including at least nine
countries. A monograph will be produced.
For more information please visit http://icots.net/roundtable/

The ISI Scientific Programme Committee for the 59th World Statistics
Congress (WSC), Sunday 25- Friday 30 August, 2013 in Hong Kong, has approved
seven invited paper sessions proposed by IASE, plus five additional invited
sessions under the youth theme. These sessions will be announced soon.
Although the deadline for special topic sessions has passed, contributed
papers and posters will be accepted beginning later in 2012 through 15
February 2013. Any attendee may offer a contributed paper on work that has
not been previously published or presented. For more details please visit
http://www.isi2013.hk

The IASE Satellite before the World Statistics Congress is scheduled
Thursday 22- Saturday 24 August 2013 in neighbouring Macau and Chaired by
Tae Rim Lee. This promises to be an exciting conference. It is a joint
satellite with IAOS, International Association of Official Statistics. The
Thursday and Saturday will feature papers proposed by IASE members on the
theme "Statistics Education for Progress". The Friday will have a special
sub-theme, "Statistics Education for Progress: Youth and Official
Statistics". On this day, IASE members will join with representatives of the
IAOS in combined sessions. Of course IAOS members are welcome to attend the
three days and I hope many will. The Friday will have four sub themes:

Official statistics resources for schools
Official statistics resources for tertiary education
Putting official statistics into the real world of youth
Educational uses of youth statistics.

Current indications are that there will be strong representation from China,
Japan and South Korea which should herald a worthwhile expansion of IASE
activities in this part of the world.
The conference website is under development by Brad Payne who produced the
excellent Malahide Satellite website in Dublin last year.

Our other major conference is ICOTS9 which will be held from 13 to 18 July
2014 in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. Flagstaff is a small city, near a variety
of mountain ranges and natural wonders, including the Grand Canyon. At an
altitude of roughly 2000 meters, Flagstaff will be the highest host city for
an ICOTS conference and the first time ICOTS has been held in the United
States.

The conference theme, in line with the mountain setting, is "Sustainability
in Statistics Education". The International Programme Committee includes the
following members:

Tim Dunne (South Africa), IPC Chair
Gillian Lancaster (United Kingdom), Scientific Coordinator
Arthur Bakker (The Netherlands), Editor of Proceedings
John Shanks (New Zealand), Information Manager
Roxy Peck (United States), Local representative on the IPC
Helen MacGillivray (Australia), Programme Scheduler

The conference website can be found at http://icots.net/9/. Please keep in
contact with this site as it will be added to over the next two years. We
are fortunate to have John Shanks as webmaster. John built our impressive
sites for both ICOTS7 and ICOTS8. Please contact Tim Dunne if you have ideas
for the program. This is an important conference as it is truly
international and much is gained by meeting colleagues in person from around
the world.

I also ask you to keep informed about the International Statistical Literacy
Project. Reija Helenius, the Director, from Statistics Finland, has advised
that the next ISLP Competition 2012-2013 will be organized the same way as
last time. The competition will start in the beginning of September this
year 2012. The website for updated information is
http://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~iase/islp/ Note that you can check your
country coordinators for the competition by searching the ISLP website.

Finally, if you have not had the opportunity to renew your IASE membership
please note that all you have to do is go to the IASE website
http://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~iase and select members and then the
membership application form. There is a substantial discount for people from
developing countries.

Best wishes
